'Bodice Ripper' Bodice....

Denimfabric, paper fragments from popular romantic novels, ribbons, zip andstitching.

Artist's Statement:

This piece is from a series of Bodices and Corsets, and wasinspired by the term 'bodice-ripper', which the Concise Oxford EnglishDictionary describes as: noun, humorous, a sexually explicit historicalnovel or film: a modern Gothic novel or historicalromance, usually in paperbackformat, featuring at least one passionatelove scene, characteristically one in whichthe heroine vainly resists submittingto the villain or hero.

Such stories are oftenhistorical, and usually regarded with humour, as the good looking experiencedhero introduces the innocent heroine to the delights and passions of love,ripping off her bodice in his urgentdesire! My bodice is a humorous slanton the hugely popular books that are devoured by thousands of women of allages, seeking the thrill of romance. Itis made from ubiquitous denim fabric, with a modern zip, but laced in thetraditional way at the back. The designof 'corset bones' on the bodice are 'saucy' fragments from several differentbodice-ripper novels, and at a distance, you can see the shape of breastsgently painted on the fragments. Thetorn and frayed edges play on the word ripped.....

'BIRD IN AGILDED CAGE'

Mixed mediacorset, life size, made from 'gilded' chicken wire, plastic, ribbon, feathers,beads and paint.

In my series ofbodices and corsets, I want to explore this controversial article of clothing, which has been around forcenturies, sometimes hidingand often enhancing the breasts, depending on the fashion and the mores of theday. Once seen as an instrumentof torture, imprisoning the female form, a corset can also offer freedom fromholding your tummy in, and cinch the waist like no gym routine could everdo! Originally underwear, today thecorset is now very much outerwear, with fashion designers reintroducing itevery couple of years, creating contradictory emotions in women. Love it or hate it, this contentious garmentgives wonderful scope for creativity and ambiguity in both the world offashion, and also art.

Each corset and bodice in the series expresses a different idea.

My 'Bird in a Gilded Cage' sculpture is a play on the words of thepopular song from 1900, 'She's only a bird in a gilded cage' composed by ArthurJ. Lamb (lyrics) and Harry von Tilzer (music), whichreportedly sold more than two million copies in sheet music! I wanted to illustrate the song, as the ladyin question would most certainly have worn a corset. In the gilded corset her trapped heart haswings, but she cannot fly away, only look at her image in the mirror like anexotic bird in a cage. Also, in England,'bird' is a slang word for a young woman or girlfriend, giving further wordplay,as this corset can be worn and is a size 12.

Here are the words to the chorus of the song, the last line of which isthe title of the corset.

She'snot, though she seems to be,

'Tissad when you think of her wasted life,

Foryouth cannot mate with age,

Andher beauty was sold,

Foran old man's gold,

L’ORIGINE DELLA FESTA DELLA DONNA

L'origine della Festa dell'8 Marzo risale al 1908, quando un gruppo di operaie di una industria tessile di New York scioperò come forma di protesta contro le terribili condizioni in cui si trovavano a lavorare.
Lo sciopero proseguì per diverse giornate ma fu proprio l'8 Marzo che la proprietà dell'azienda bloccò le uscite della fabbrica, impedendo alle operaie di uscire dalla stessa.
Un incendio ferì mortalmente 129 operaie, tra cui anche delle italiane, donne che cercavano semplicemente di migliorare la propria qualità del lavoro.
Tra di loro vi erano molte immigrate, tra cui anche delle donne italiane che, come le altre, cercavano di migliorare la loro condizione di vita. L'8 marzo assunse col tempo un'importanza mondiale, diventando il simbolo delle vessazioni che la donna ha dovuto subire nel corso dei secoli e il punto di partenza per il riscatto della propria dignità.
L'8 Marzo è quindi il ricordo di quella triste giornata.
Non è una "festa" ma piuttosto una ricorrenza da riproporre ogni anno come segno indelebile di quanto accaduto il secolo scorso.

Women in Art show es un grupo de artistas internacionales notables y talentosos que quieren decir algo valioso a través de sus obras!

Se trata de una exposición colectiva que habla sobre los derechos de la mujer en general y en el mundo del arte, en particular.

Cosas de mujeres en el siglo 21, y todo aquello de importancia social sobre las mujeres; para decir no a la violencia domestica y no a toda clase de violencia simbolica , para decir no a todo tipo de discriminación.

Para levantar nuestras voces a través del arte y transmitir en forma universal nuestro mensaje.

Porque somos simplemente seres humanos que desean vivir en el pleno ejercicio de sus derechos. Es muy interesante que este colectivo no esta conformado solo por mujeres, sino que también muchos artistas de genero masculino acompañan al unisono este grito de libertad y de women rights.

Con el apoyo del Ministerio de Cultura del Uruguay, a través de las direcciones culturales de Florida, Sr. Alvaro Riva y de Canelones y Santa Lucia para el Women in Art 3, Sres, Alfredo Fernandez y Eugenia Cabrera, con la asistencia curatorial de Rodolfo Torres y la curadoria de Noemi Silvera ( creadora del Women in Art show ).

Se han reunido hasta el momento en el curso del 2011, 50 artistas de 17 paises, increscendo. En el año 2012 la muestra pasara en itinerancia bajo la dirección de cultura para recorrer las diversas ciudades de Uruguay, con todos aquellos artistas del colectivo que deseen continuar acompañándonos en este viaje.

qui vi invio le ultime novità delle mostre
WOMEN IN ART ITINERANTE è un evento culturale ufficiale in Uruguay 2012 !!!!!
il Women in Art commincerà a girare per tutte le città dell'Uruguay il prossimo anno a carico del Ministero di Cultura e Direttori Culturali
per il quale si convoca a tutti gi artisti a fare sua RE-ISCRIZZIONE con data di scadenza 31 ottobre 2011 i lavori devono essere già arrivati in Uruguay e per prendere parte di questo viaggio che portiamo avanti
la CONVOCATORIA è anche per i nuovi artisti che vorrano fare iscrizzione per prima volta, vi invitamo a inviare le foto e chiedere la info quanto prima
La convocatoria si chiuderà definitivamente a febbraio 2012 e la mostra partirà ai suoi viaggi d'Itineranza
ma ci sono 2 eventi prima di partire in viaggio, quindi vi aspettiamo!!
12 di novembre inauguramo con Rodolfo Torres a Museo istorico e Centro Culturale di Santa Lucia
e a febbraio si chiude il Women in Art per comminciare il viaggio, foto, video e tutto il materiae delle succesive mostre sarà sempre pubblicato sul blog

WOMEN IN ART ITINERANT ìt is an offficial cultural event in Uruguay 2012 !!!!!!
Women in Art will be in travel to the uruguayan cities cause Culture Minister and Cultural Directors
then we CALL TO RE-INSCRIPTION to the artists and INSCRIPTIONS to new artists
dead line is 31/ october / 2011 in this date artworks must stay arrived in Uruguay
inauguration with Rodolfo Torres, wil be 12/nov/2011 at the historic Museum of Santa Lucia, and Cultural Center J.E. Rodo
and in february 2012 Women in Art will be "close" to start the itinerance then travels
all photos, videoas and everything about nexts events, also new artists and artworks will be published in the blog

Aqui le envio las ultimas novedades de las muestras
WOMEN IN ART ITINERANTE es un evento cultural oficial en Uruguay 2012 !!!!!!!
el Women in Art comenzara a girar por todas las ciudades de Uruguay en el 2012 a cargo del MINISTERIO DE CULTURA DEL URUGUAY y Direcciones de Cultura
por lo cual se convoca a la RE-INSCRIPCION de los ARTISTAS (FINO AL 31/10/2011 todos los trabajos deben estar ya aqui )que deseen que sus obras formen parte del viaje
y les invitamos cuanto antes a finalizar su re-inscripcion, para entrar en el viaje
y tambien CONVOCAMOS a NUEVOS ARTTISTAS (FECHA FINAL 29/02/2012 ) que quieran formar parte de este proyecto a enviarnos las fotos de los trabajos y realizar su INSCRIPCION lo antes posible
Tendremos 2 ultimos eventos antes de la muestra partir a su Itinerancia
el 12 de noviembre inauguramos con Rodolfo Torres en Santa Lucia y en febrero 2012 cerramos definitivamente las inscripciones al Women in Art
Despues el Women in Art partira en viaje, seran varias ciudades y por las novedades podeis visitar el blog donde se publicaran fotos y videos de las nuevas aventuras del Women in Art Itinerante
